FAQs
Q: How do I enroll my child?

A: Students will not be allowed to enroll in the BCAEP until the individual student and his or her parent(s) and/or guardian(s) are present during an admission conference to discuss the placement.  This admission conference takes approximately twenty minutes, and may be set up as soon as a placement is arranged. Students arriving at the BCAEP without proper assignment procedures, or without completing the admission conference, will be held out of classes until the requirements have been met.

Q: What are the school hours?

A: The BCAEP will not provide supervision until 7:30 AM.  Classes will begin at 7:45 AM and students will be dismissed at 2:15 PM (high school) and 2:30 PM (middle school). Students will be released from class once their rides have arrived.   The BCAEP will not provide supervision beyond 3:30 PM.  The doors to the building will be locked at that time; therefore students must be picked up from school no later than 3:30 PM.

Q: Which calendar does the BCAEP follow?

A: The BCAEP shares the same calendar (holidays, testing schedule, etc.) as other Barrow County Schools campuses.

Q: What school supplies will my child need?

A: Students are expected to arrive at school with appropriate instructional supplies on a daily basis.  Students are expected to bring all textbooks, paper, writing utensils, notebooks, and headphones needed for instructional activities.  Writing utensils such as pencils and pens may be purchased from the vending machines located in the Meeting Room.

Q: Is there a school uniform dress policy?

A: Yes.  Students must wear ankle-length khaki pants that fit at the waist, a belt, a white-collared shirt, and closed-toe shoes such as boots, dress shoes, and/or athletic shoes.  The white-collared shirts should contain a logo smaller than two inches in diameter.  Any outer garments worn in the building must remain unzipped or unfastened at all times and should not have a hood. Head-wear (hats, bandanas, etc.) is not permitted.  If students report to school out of uniform, they will not be allowed to report to class, until the student's uniform is in compliance with dress code.

Q: How much do meals cost?

A: If a student is on the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Policy at his or her home school, that status will apply to the BCAEP as well.  Students who do not qualify for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Policy will be expected to pay $1.75 for lunches and $1.25 for breakfast.

Q: Are transportation services provided?

A: Barrow County Schools does not provide bus services to or from the BCAEP unless these services were established through the student’s individualized education plan (IEP) prior to the student’s assignment to the BCAEP.

Q: Will I be able to participate in sports or extracurricular activities?

A: No.  Students who are assigned to the BCAEP are not permitted to participate in sports or extracurricular activities for any Barrow County schools. Students are not permitted on any other Barrow County Schools campus at any time.  This includes community activities that take place on a Barrow County Schools campus, such as “Relay for Life”.  If extenuating circumstances exist, a student and his or her parent(s) and/or guardian(s) may appeal to the Director of Alternative Education for special permission to attend an event.  Permission will be given only if both the Director of Alternative Education and the chief administrator of the affected campus are in agreement.  Students assigned to the BCAEP are not permitted to attend any events in which a Barrow County school is a participant, including activities which do not take place on a Barrow County Schools campus.
