Student Handbook

Bear Creek Middle School staff is excited about the start of an awesome school year! You may be aware that last year we began researching uniform programs and also began seeking input from students and parents on uniform preferences. In response to feedback from our families and in an effort to ensure all students learn and thrive in a positive, safe environment, we have adopted a school uniform policy that began in the fall 2014.

In spring 2013, Winder-Barrow Middle School surveyed our families about their interest in and preferences for a uniform policy.  Results from this survey were split evenly, with 50 percent of responses favoring uniforms and 50 percent of responses against uniforms. In light of these results, our School Governance team voted to establish an optional uniform policy for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders during the 2013-2014 school year.

In March 2014, we again surveyed our sixth grade families about uniform preferences and the results were again split, 50/50. After further study and consideration of these results, the BCMS School Governance Team voted to establish a three year uniform transition period, with uniforms becoming mandatory for all students by the 2016-2017 school year. The BCMS uniform policy for each grade during the three year transition is outlined below:

School-Year          Grade Level          Uniform Policy

2016-2017              6-8                         Mandatory

A school uniform program offers many benefits. Uniforms provide for increased school safety by making school members easily identifiable. They reduce distractions and allow for increased focus on academics. School uniforms also reduce clothing costs and promote a more leveled playing field for students, promoting self-image and a sense of belonging for all students. An effective school uniform program encourages a sense of school identity, unity, and pride.

The back of this letter provides details of school uniform requirements. Uniform items may be purchased in any department or discount store, such as Academy, Old Navy, Wal-Mart, JCPenney, Target, and Goodwill.

Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the uniform policy. Again, we look forward to having you and your child becoming part of the BCMS Grizzlies!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jennifer Wood, Principal
