Winder-Barrow High School Scholarships & Awards (2010-11)

Students Without Mothers (SWM) now accepting applications for college scholarships to be awarded in 2011.To qualify, you must be:
- Georgia resident—member of graduating class of 2011
- Planning to attend a two or four year college/technical college
- Mother is not in the home (due to death, or other unfortunate circumstances)
- Scholarships are $4,000 each. Applications and additional information is available on line at www.studentswithoutmothers.org or call 770-724-0648 for a paper application. On-line applications are accepted from September through December 31, 2010.
WBHS Student Council Senior Scholarship Essay Competition ($500)-Open to any WBHS senior graduating in May 2011. The competition is comprised of writing an essay that completely answers the following question: “Why are leadership skills necessary during and after high school, and how can being a leader help you accomplish your future goals?” Applications are available in the CRC-6.204. Completed application and essay are due to Ms. Harris or Ms. McDaniel by January 7, 2011.
NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS): This renewable, need-based scholarship provides financial support for students who choose to study in one of the following areas: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. The amount for the GMS will be based on the cost of tuition, fees, books and living expenses for the 2011-12 academic year. There are three components of the GMS scholarship application process: (1) Student Application (Nominee Personal Information) (2) Educator’s evaluation of the student’s academic record (Nominator Form) (3) Evaluation of the student’s community service and leadership activities (Recommender Form).
Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:
- Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander or Hispanic American and are a citizen, or legal/permanent resident of USA
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or earned a GED
- Will be enrolling for the first time at a U. S. located, accredited college/university in the fall/2011 as a full-time, degree seeking, first-year student
- Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities
- Meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria
- Submit required forms: nomine, nominator and recommender
- GMS strongly advise students to have ALL parts of their applications completed online at www.gmsp.org or download application/forms. Application deadline is January 10, 2011. An “INFORMATION ONLY” flyer is available in the CRC-6.204.
Chick-fil-A of Winder/Battle of Barrow Scholarship: To be considered for this scholarship, seniors (Class of 2011) must meet the following requirements:
- Cumulative GPA of B+ or better
- Completed/registered to take the ACT or SAT
- Active in community service
- The completed application must also include the following: (1) A 250 word essay describing your long term goals (2) A 150 word essay explaining how this scholarship will help meet your financial needs in pursuing your education (3) A copy of the college acceptance letter (4) A copy of your ACT/SAT scores (5) A current photograph (6) A letter of recommendation from a teacher or administrator (7) A letter of recommendation from someone who is personally familiar with your character/leadership abilities and (8) A copy of your current high school transcript. Applications are available in the CRC-6.204 & must be returned to the CRC by end of the school day on Friday, Jan 28, 2011.
Barrow County Farm Bureau Scholarship ($1,200): To recognize and assist deserving and outstanding young people who are pursing a college degree in agriculture or a related field. Eligibility requirements include:
- Member of the graduating class of 2011
- Attend one of the colleges/universities within the University System of Georgia
- Major in an agricultural, environmental science, family/consumer science or a related agricultural field
- Parents/legal guardians are members of the Barrow County Farm Bureau as of September 1, 2010
- Applications available in the CRC-6.204—and must be returned to CRC by Wednesday, February 9, 2011. Winners will be announced at Honors Night in May.
The Classic Center Cultural Foundation Scholarship ($1,000 each) will be awarded in the areas of (1) vocal performance (2) musical instrument and
(3) performance art (drama/dance). Any high school Junior or Senior is eligible to apply. Qualifications are:
- Strong commitment to performing arts (drama, musical theatre, band or chorus) and must be a junior or senior planning to attend a college or university
- (you DO NOT have to major in performing arts in college)
- Overall B average or above
- Demonstrate leadership qualities in school
- Cannot be related to anyone employed by the Classic Center
- Must perform at the audition (April 19, 2011 – beginning @ 5 pm)
- Letter of recommendation
- Applications are available in the CRC-6.204 and must be received at the Classic City Cultural Foundation by March 11, 2010 -- 5:00 pm.
Barrow County Chamber of Commerce Glen Segars Scholarship: Must be a resident of Barrow County and a 2011 high school graduate. Other criteria include:
- Must attend a 2 or 4 year accredited college in the United States in 2011
- List of extracurricular activities, awards, honors and community service
- ACT / SAT Scores
- 50 word essay
- Students accepted to a government military academy is not eligible for this scholarship. Applications are available in the CRC-6.204 and must be returned by April 5, 2011.
Scholarships For Students Fluent In Spanish: The University of Georgia is pleased to announce three new scholarships funded by The Goizueta Foundation for students with financial need and fluency in Spanish. For more information and to apply on-line at:
www.admissions.uga.edu/article/spanish Deadline is March 1, 2011.
Univision 34 “League of Champions” Scholarship Program ($1,000): from October 2010 until May 2011, Univision 34 Atlanta will accept applications for the student-of-the-month program, which recognizes Hispanic high school seniors who excels in academic success, athletic achievement or community involvement. Requirement includes:
- Bilingual (Spanish/English)
- Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (based on 4.0 scale)
- Hispanic descent (from Central America-excluding Belize)-- Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, South America (excluding Guyana, Suriname & French Guiana) or other Spanish cultures.
- One student essay and one teacher nomination.
- Two applicants will be selected each month to receive the $1,000 scholarship. To be considered, the completed application packet must be postmarked no later than May 31, 2011. Application packets (English and Spanish) are available in the CRC-6.204.
