Winder-Barrow JROTC Raider Team Claims First State Championship Title
The Winder-Barrow Bulldogg Battalion Raiders were on a mission this year. Work together as a team and win. Their preparation began in the spring with a 6 week Raider conditioning training regimen that focused on individual fitness. What seemed like never-ending sets of sit-ups and countless miles running around the community, these training sessions were actually the foundation of our championship endeavor. Mix in a scrimmage with East Jackson High School and a joint training day with the Jackson County Raider Team and the Bulldoggs were ready to begin the JROTC Area 8 competitions. We found early success winning first place honors at the first competition of the season and completed the regular season on top as the Area 8 Region Champions in the mixed division. At the end of our regular season, our team was healthy and determined coming off a week long fall break. With two weeks to prepare for the state competition, Raider Commander Michael Twitty and Team Captain Bre McNamara kept the team focused and motivated as our path to success became clearer. And on Saturday morning October 28th, the 2017 Raider Team mustered for the last time at 4:45 am to travel to Spalding High School in Griffin, GA. The result, a 1st place finish in the tire flip, a 1st place finish in the one rope bridge, a 3rd place finish in the Raider Fitness Course, a 4th place finish in the Cross Country Rescue and a 5th place finish in the Team run. Collectively and by a narrow margin, the Winder Barrow High School Raiders Mixed Team edged out North Paulding High School and Stephens County teams along with six other “best of the best” Tier 3 mixed teams to earn our first State Championship Title. Our 2017 Raiders: Michael Twitty (Sr), Bre McNamara (Sr), Trey Loftin (Sr), Rebecca Tibbitts (Sr), Nicholas Nagy (Sr), Ryan Hart (Jr), Alex Gomez (Jr), Winnonah Evenson (Jr), Caleb Ayer (Sophomore), Kassity Vonier (Sophomore), Riley Bush (Freshman), and Lizzy Mejia (Freshman). WINDER-BARROW HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FIELD AND BECOME SCHOOL WINNERS IN WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN
There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion and lead by example—in the classroom, on the field and within the community. Today, Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizes Ashley Everett and Parks Jordan from Winder-Barrow High School and their dedication to never cutting corners by naming them School Winners.
“These students are known by their teachers and friends for their commitment to excellence. We are excited and honored that a program like Wendy’s High School Heisman is also recognizing their “GG” effort,” said Dr. Al Darby, Principal
Dr. Darby and our 2017-2018 HoPe officers (President: Katherine Narciso, VP of Development: Alondra Martinez, VP of Communications: Luis Caldera, VP of Service: Juandiego Benjumea) showing off the 2017 edition of the HoPe t-shirt.
