PBIS Reward System

Our PBIS program is based around three goals:

  • Be Respectful
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Safe

We incentivized these three behaviors with daily, weekly, and long-term benefits. The PBIS program is differentiated between the High School and Middle School.

The High School PBIS Program uses concepts drawn from personal finance. Students are issued checkbooks and check registers to keep track of their “PBIS dollars”, earned weekly by meeting expectations for the three targeted behaviors. Teachers allocate points in each class for each day. Three points are possible for each class, with four classes per day. Points are NEVER subtracted from student accounts, accentuating the focus on positive interventions.

On a weekly basis, they are issued paychecks and allowed to purchase rewards. Rewards include privileges such as exemptions from the uniform mandate, supervised time outside, or coupons donated by local businesses. Rewards are scaled in increments of sixty points, representing one week of consistently positive behavior. More desirable rewards require more points, giving motivation to delay short-term gains for larger long-term gains.

Students are required to write checks, using special PBIS checkbooks, to purchase these rewards. The PBIS program fosters awareness of banking, finance, supply and demand, scarcity, and opportunity cost. The rewards appeal to students and increase dedication to positive behavior.
