Language Arts

My name is Melissa Serro, and this is my first year teaching at Apalachee High School. I'm increadibly proud to be a wildcat, especially because I student taught during the 2019-2020 school year with Ms. Bohannon. This school's students, faculty and community have welcomed me, and I am thrilled to return as an AHS teacher this fall!

I am originally from Marietta, Georiga, and grew up amidst the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and Atlanta. To me, I think of Marietta as a sweet spot between the blue ridge and city life. However, Athens is now my home. I attended the University of Georgia as an undergraduate, where I earned a Bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Italian. I later returned to the University of Georgia and earned my Master's of Arts in Teaching in English Education. In my free time, I enjoy reading, hiking, gardening, and sipping a good cup of coffee with friends.

In my classroom, students and I build a community of diversity and respect. So much of our lives are spent reading and writing, and I want to provide each of my students the opporunity to use their voice. I am a firm believer that today's youth will change the future. My hope is that students learn how to share their experiences and empathize with others, shed light on injustices, and advocate for a better tomorrow.

Please reach out to me with any questions and concerns, or even just to say "Hi!" I am happy to offer my support and get to know you all.
