8th Grade

As 8th graders, we ask that you start thinking about your transition and where you are on seeing yourself in high school. Become more familiar with how you are as a student and the best ways you learn.

The BASA Counseling Department is very excited to work with your 8th grade student! The eighth grade year is one of the most important transition years in your child's life. As your student's counselors, we are available to assist with a variety of questions, issues, and concerns. We serve as advocates for you and your child.

8th Grade Counseling Support

During the 8th grade year, we will work with your student's teachers to lead monthly lessons related to Personal/Social Development (including mental health awareness), Academic Skills (including study skills and organization) and Career Planning (including YouScience Career Assessments).

Additionally, we will meet with students individually and in group sessions. Small groups focused on topics such as anxiety, self-esteem, grief, and study skills, will be offered during connections and Crew. Counselors have caseloads according to the student's last name and will follow students through high school. Additionally, your student's counselor will help your student plan for high school and will help coordinate all high school scheduling.

Last name A-M - Mrs. Rakia Marcus
Last name N-Z - Dr. Cindy Murphy

What to Expect in 8th Grade

Your student's counselor will work with your student to complete the high School planning process.

In January, the counselor will present lessons with all 8th grade students to review graduation plans, diploma requirements, block scheduling, and high school terminology. In February, the school counselors will coordinate with 8th grade Crew leaders to assist students in selecting high school courses. It is important as a parent to review this information with your child. Parents are invited to a parent meeting around this time to review all questions and concerns.
