Second Grade Advanced Content Teacher
My name is Richard Garland. This is my 15th year of teaching at Yargo Elementary and my 1st year as part of the second great team. I began my career teaching in the Early Intervention Program, taught fourth grade for four years, and was our Gifted resource teacher and coordinator for the last five years. Prior to teaching, I was a research technician in the entomology department at UGA. My undergraduate degree is from UGA in Forest Resources, which is where I also did my master’s work in Science Education. In addition to certification in that and Early Childhood Education, I also have my endorsements in English as a Second Language and Gifted Education.
I believe that education begins by building a rapport with my students and by building a collaborative relationship with them and their parents. I challenge my students through project-based learning that requires them to apply and expand on their knowledge; and I encourage them to share our discoveries at home. I believe in digging deep into topics so that my students have a fuller understanding – and whenever possible, making them relevant to students’ own interests and lives. I also look for opportunities to integrate diverse technology tools that, so that students can express their learning in a variety of ways. When we’re all working as a team, exploring and investigating, we can create a classroom community and grow together.
