Mathematics Content Specialist, Grades 9-12

Leah McConnell serves as the high school Math Content Specialist for BCSS. Through her role, she works alongside the Teaching and Learning Team and school administrators to provide support to teachers to implement instructional practices for a positive learning experience for students in the mathematics classroom.

Leah comes from a family of educators and has 15 years in education. She's taught high school mathematics in North Carolina and with Jackson County Schools. During her time at JCS, she served primarily as a mathematics teacher, but worked strategically with administration and teachers to increase student growth and achievement in her content area. She also served as an instructional coach and academic department chair.

Outside of teaching, she has 10 years of experience in the business sector as a mathematics coach, as well as an assessment and curriculum specialist. She also worked with many companies and states to create a variety of materials and assessments. She also currently serves as a community coach for Open Up Resources and as a content specialist for K12 Assessment Solutions.

Leah is from Franklin, NC and resides in Jackson County with her husband, Jeff, daughter Khloe, and miniature dachshund LJ. She loves to travel, read, and play the piano.

  • 2008: Bachelors of Science in Mathematics - Western Carolina University (Major concentration in Mathematics Education)
  • 2014: Masters in School Administration - Western Carolina University
  • 2021: Specialists in Curriculum and Instruction - Piedmont University
  • Currently attending Piedmont University to obtain a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction
