Implementation of the Barrow County Mentor Program

  • Prospective mentors are recruited and trained (1 hour training) before becoming active as a Mentor.

  • After reviewing the background of the mentors, the schools identify students they believe will benefit by having a Mentor.

  • The student is interviewed and the Mentor Program is explained to them before being "matched".  No "match" will be made unless it is 100% agreeable to the student.

  • Once a student is selected, the parent's permission is obtained.  Without parental consent, a Mentor will not be assigned.

  • Students are informed by the school coordinator of what to expect and what is expected from them during the mentor relationship.

  • A Mentor Coordinator is designated in each school to make sure meetings are arranged and to serve as the contact person for both parties.

  • Visitation forms are completed by mentors each time they visit the school.

  • Mentor Share Sessions are held at the end of the school year to give mentors the opportunity to discuss their experiences and act as a support group for other Mentors.

  • Recruiting and training is conducted throughout the year by the Barrow County School System Public Relations Department.  Training sessions are held on a weekly basis during the first three months of the school year and bi-monthly thereafter.

  • A criminal background check is required before a mentor is paired with a Barrow County Student.
