Another powerful collaboration in Barrow County is Family Connection; their function is to provide resources to all families and children of Barrow County as well as provide assistance to our Performance Learning Center through Communities in Schools. Community participation is often sought on matters of curriculum, policy decisions and budget discussions.  Such programs as Partners in Education, which involves local businesses, is designed to act as a catalyst in bringing diversified groups together, as well as exposing our children to “real-world” and work experiences. A program that has proven to be a powerful connection between community and school is the Mentor Program.  Community members have the opportunity to share experiences and knowledge with students.  The influence and guidance of a mentor can make a positive difference in a child’s life. Typically, close to 400 volunteers spend an hour of their time each week one-on-one with a student helping to teach valuable social skills, assist with homework or just be a “listening friend”.
