August 7 Update

Click to see Back to School Update

[Spanish] In preparation for distance learning for all students, please read the below updates on a number of key topics for the first day of school on August 17.

Chromebooks

BCSS has a limited number of devices available in schools, but we know that all families do not have access to technology at home. At this time, we are asking families to limit requests to one device per family. If supplies allow after initial deployment, requests for second devices may be considered. Please note: We ordered additional devices in late May, early June, and again in early August, but due to delays in the supply chain, we are still waiting to receive those Chromebooks.

Please contact your child’s school to request a Chromebook. Your child’s school will also provide a schedule for when you can visit the school to drive-thru and check-out the Chromebook.

If you are considering purchasing your own device, our IT team has put together some technology recommendations that might help with your decision.

Internet Access

BCSS is in the process of installing four permanent WIFI hotspots that will be available in select school parking lots. Locations will include Apalachee High, Winder-Barrow High, Auburn Elementary and Bear Creek Middle Schools.

In addition, we have 16 mobile hotspots that will be installed on buses. We will soon share details on where those buses will be parked for students to access WIFI during school hours.

We do not have individual hotspots that can be checked out for families at this time.

Orientation

Schools will be sharing their plans for orientation with families directly. Plans will be different for each school. Students may meet teachers virtually or schools might offer a drive-through for a brief teacher introduction. Please visit your school’s website or social media pages for additional details.

Athletics

High school athletics will continue to follow GHSA guidelines. In an announcement Thursday, August 6, GHSA cancelled preseason football scrimmage games. The regular schedule remains to start the week of September 4. GHSA also moved competitive cheerleading and one-act play tentatively to spring. The fall high school sports of volleyball, cross country and fast-pitch softball remain on schedule, and their first competitions were allowed this week.

For BCSS athletes, no tournament competition will be allowed. Cheerleaders and the marching band will support teams at home, but not at away games.

It was also announced on Monday, August 3rd that all BCSS middle school athletics are cancelled for the fall season.

Meals

Our School Food Nutrition team is developing a plan for meal options, which we hope to share next week. In the meantime, families are encouraged to complete the online meal application for Free or Reduced Meals at www.myschoolapps.com. One can also be mailed to you by calling or emailing Olinda Slaton, Barrow County Free and Reduced Clerk at 770-867-4527, Olinda.Slaton@barrow.k12.ga.us.

Phased Reopening Plan

Our goal is to have our students in our school buildings as safely and as quickly as possible. While we are starting the school year online for all students, we will continue to evaluate our current conditions to determine when we will reopen schools to students. When that time comes, we anticipate a phased approach similar to what is shown below.
