We Had a Great Week!

Book Tasting

This week flew by so quickly! Students have been figuring out what it means to be a fifth-grader and have begun to demonstrate independence. Our week was full of activities that helped us with developing our classroom community. We had a book tasting to learn about genres of books that we might like but have never tried to read. We wrote our first stories, played games in math, and had fun connecting with friends new and old.

Math Discussions

This coming week we will begin learning about the order of operations in solving expressions. Families may be familiar with “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or PEMDAS, which stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. We are teaching students to use GEMS, instead, to help prevent misconceptions about braces, brackets, and that addition or multiplication are not always first. GEMS stands for “Groupings, Exponents, Multiplication & division (left to right), and Subtraction & addition (left to right). At home, use whichever makes the most sense to your student.
