Grad Track Student Spotlight: India Garrett

Grad Track Student image

India Garrett is an Apalachee High School senior who has made great strides during her time there. She is putting herself in a great position for future success. India is going to finish the first semester of her senior year with all A’s and B’s on her report card. This will be an amazing accomplishment for India because most of her classes this semester have a heavy math focus.

India struggled with math during her freshman and sophomore years. Due to that struggle, she had to retake Algebra and Geometry at Foothills. Through lots of hard work and perseverance, India got through those two classes and got herself back on track to graduate. This was no small feat for her as she did not see herself as a math person. India now knows she can not only pass a math class, but she can do so with a high mark.

This attitude she has toward her studies will serve her well as she goes on to pursue her career goal of being a labor and delivery nurse. She has her sights set on college and is trying to figure out where she wants to go. She has dreams of attending school at either the University of Miami or the University of Kentucky, but she may start locally at either Georgia Gwinnett College or Lanier Technical College. Whichever route she takes, she knows she will be able to do the work at the next level.

Andy Dean, the Graduation Specialist for Apalachee, worked with India over the past few years to make sure she stayed on track to graduate. Mr. Dean says, “I am so proud of India’s dedication and determination to get back on track. She is a student who knows what it takes to get the job done.”

India’s mom was also a big part in making sure India took care of the makeup courses. She and Mr. Dean stayed in consistent communication about India’s progress and what she needed to do to complete her math requirements. India says, “If it wasn’t for my mom, I never would have made it.”

India’s hard work to get to this point is commendable and Apalachee High School will be proud to have her as a member of the graduating class of 2024.

We are proud of our students who are on the “Grad Track.” A Grad Track student has either failed one or more academic classes and/or is behind in credits needed for graduation with their cohort class. Graduation Specialists at all three Barrow County School System (BCSS) high schools support students who meet these qualifications.
