The Barrow County Board of Education voted on and heard about several safety and security enhancements and plans at the September Work Session and October meeting.
We wanted to update you on topics related to security discussed at tonight’s Board of Education (BOE) Work Session. These actions are to quickly enhance the safety and security procedures we currently have while we continue to actively research and discuss additional safety measures at our schools.
I want to commend our faculty, staff, parents, and students for the courage and compassion they showed today during our first day back on campus. While I know today was difficult, it was an important step toward recovery for our Chee Nation. Thanks to our AHS Family, law enforcement, counselors, mental health providers, and transportation team, we welcomed 88% of our students back to campus.
It meant so much to see so many of you back in our building this morning for our Open House. We know it wasn’t easy to take those first steps and we hope students, families, and staff found some comfort together.
Monday’s Open House is an important step for CHEE Nation. We will be there to welcome you back with open arms and answer your questions as you connect with teachers, see classmates and visit our remote location we’re calling CHEE East.
"We need your help. It’s important our students understand that words matter and what they might see as 'funny' or just a prank can hurt and scare people. Those words also have consequences." - BCSS Superintendent & BCSO Sheriff
Our Apalachee teachers and staff are back at school this week preparing to welcome students during our phased return which begins with an Open House on Sept. 23. Some of our extracurriculars chose to resume in competitions, including CHEE volleyball, softball, XC, and our Marching Cats performing in a band exhibition.
We can’t wait to see you for Open House on Monday, Sept. 23. You will be able to connect with teachers, see classmates, better understand what our remote location will look like, and ask questions.
As we shared Friday, we will begin a phased reopening for Apalachee High School beginning on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. From Sept. 24 – Oct. 4, students will attend school for half days to help them ease back into the routine at a comfortable pace.
We are planning a thoughtful and phased return to school the week of September 23. We want to ensure we have the right systems and resources in place, including:
My heart is with every member of CHEE Nation. I know many of you want to be together back at school, and we’re working on those plans.
