MAGNET SCHOOL information
Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy is a school of choice in the Barrow County School System. As a magnet school, our students choose to attend BASA in order to personalize their learning according to their college and career aspirations. Much like a college experience, students choose a "major" pathway to focus their studies on. We offer several innovative, high-demand fields to choose from, including the arts, healthcare science, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).
In collaborating with our business and college partners, we understand their need for graduates who are highly prepared in a concentrated field of study. However, we also learned from them that they need future students and employees who are well rounded, balanced, and can see issues from a variety of angles. For this reason, students will also choose a "minor" pathway from a different area. For example, a student who is majoring in healthcare science might choose to minor in visual arts. Who knows, this could lead to an exciting, successful career in medical illustration!
Our students' experience in their academic courses is also relevant to our magnet themes. Students will be exposed to a variety of art forms and works in their language arts and social studies courses. In math and science, students will apply the knowledge and skills they learn to solve real-world problems in healthcare and STEM.
For additional information about our magnet programming, please see the resources below. Our magnet director, Dr. Cheryl Guy (firstname.lastname@example.org), is also available to answer any questions you may have about this unique opportunity.
