Barrow Arts & Sciences Academy 10th grader Tamia Rogers earned the opportunity to participate in an elite CTAE program in Athens during the summer of 2023. When the Sims Academy Dual Enrollment team learned about Tamia’s interest in the marketing and hospitality industry, they shared information with her about the Hospitality Careers Academy (HCA).
The HCA is a weeklong summer experience at the Classic Center where students learn more about industry businesses through tours and leadership team-building activities. It also offers job shadowing and meetings with industry leaders. Tamia completed the application and interview process and was selected to participate in the program.
Tamia says, “HCA was an amazing experience. We had an event to plan and prepare for, real budgets, obstacles and deadlines. I worked with the marketing team, and learned there are so many different aspects in the field - social media, promotions and in-person conversations. From the beginning of planning to the event set up, everyone was patient and kind and worked with every student personally. They challenged us and encouraged us to do our best. I got a chance to do what I have a passion for. This program will forever be a core memory and major moment in my life, and I know I’ll take the messages and values The Classic Center team taught me through the rest of high school and my future. I can’t wait to go back!”
Tamia’s mother, Jovan Rogers adds, “From arrival to the culminating ‘Celebration of the Arts’ closing event, Tamia seemed to flourish - in skills and confidence. She has expressed a deeper level of understanding and interest in the hospitality industry."
BASA Principal Nick Scheman says, “HCA is an extremely valuable experience for students, and I have no doubt that Tamia represented BASA very well.”
Sims Academy CEO and CTAE Director Dr. Jennifer Wood agrees. “As CTAE Director, it is clear Tamia is an outstanding young lady who embodies the spirit of Barrow BOLD and Barrow's Best. Her dedication, curiosity, and leadership have set an impressive example for her peers. Her commitment and passion remind us that a person's age is not a barrier to finding their passion, as she creates her own path in the hospitality industry. The future holds a great deal of promise for her, and I am eager to see what it brings.”
