Congratulations and welcome to Dr. Katherine Brown, who will serve Barrow County School System as the new Chief Academic Officer (CAO). The Board of Education approved Dr. Brown as CAO at the May 6 meeting.
Dr. Brown is no stranger to BCSS. After starting her education career as a second grade teacher in Lowndes County, she taught at Bethlehem Elementary School from 2006-2009.
"I am honored and excited to return to the Barrow County School System to serve as Chief Academic Officer. This community holds a special place in my heart, and I look forward to working alongside dedicated educators and families to support our students’ growth and success. Together, we will continue to be Barrow Bold in our commitment to excellence, innovation, and opportunity for every student."
Dr. Brown also has experience as a teacher and Gifted and Advanced District Specialist with Clarke County School District. Those roles focused on implementing enrichment practices schoolwide, supporting advanced curriculum, helping to develop project-based learning through creativity and problem-solving, and STEM practices.
From 2017 on, she’s been an Assistant Principal at Colham Ferry Elementary and Principal at Oconee County Primary School and Colham Ferry Elementary. Dr. Brown also shares her knowledge of gifted and creative education practices with graduate students at the University of Georgia, where she has taught courses in the department of Educational Psychology as an adjunct instructor since 2012. Dr. Brown recently completed her Dyslexia Endorsement through Northeast Georgia RESA.
The CAO position will be new to BCSS starting in the 2025-26 school year. Superintendent Dr. Dallas LeDuff says the position is meant to guide and support staff to help improve academic success through a heavy emphasis on literacy, comprehension, and curriculum practices.
