BCSS Update for 2021-22 School Year

Barrow County School System: Masks will be optional. Mitigation practices will be maintained. Visitors are welcome back into our schools. Meal service will resume in cafeterias.

The Barrow County School System is eager to see our students and staff return in person on August 3 for the first day of school. We are optimistic and looking forward to a more “normal” year, based on the current pandemic situation. You can view the BCSS 2021-22 student calendar here.

BCSS will continue to monitor community spread levels, and decisions will be made locally at schools based on their specific situations. As mandated by the Department of Public Health, schools are required to contact trace COVID-19 cases and enforce quarantines/isolation of staff and students as needed.

The below plans for returning to school in August may change if we see a spike in COVID-19 cases.

TOP FOUR Things to Know for 2021-22

1.    Masks will be optional. Masks are recommended but not required for the 2021-22 school year. Non-vaccinated students and staff should follow the CDC guidelines regarding mask usage.

2.    Mitigation practices will be maintained. Schools will continue to utilize physical distancing and cohorts when possible. Everyone is encouraged to practice proper hygiene, such as washing their hands. Students and staff should self-monitor daily for COVID-19 symptoms.

3.    Visitors are welcome back into our schools. Masks will be optional for vaccinated visitors. As a reminder, identification is required as part of our security check-in process. In July, we will share school open house plans. We will also share if/how parents may escort kindergarteners to class on the first day of school.

4.    Meal service will resume in cafeterias. Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle to fill in our bottle filler stations.

We encourage all eligible students to get vaccinated this summer. BCSS is currently coordinating with community partners about providing an opportunity for students (age 12+) to get vaccinated. We are asking all families with children ages 12 and older to complete this short two-question survey to determine if there is enough interest to organize a district vaccination event for students.
