First Sims Academy Dual Enrollment Welding Cohort

First Dual Enrollment Welding Cohort

Winder-Barrow High School, Apalachee High School and Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy students are on their way to earning two welding certificates in just two semesters at Lanier Technical College. This first Sims Academy Dual Enrollment Welding Cohort will earn high school credit, complete a pathway, and qualify to pursue the Option B graduation plan if they choose. They will be in position to earn additional welding certificates or complete a welding diploma or degree at Lanier Technical College, all leading to a secure career after graduating high school.

Sims Academy partner Kubota Manufacturing donated personal protective equipment like welding helmets, goggles, insulated gloves, and equipment for current and future students to use while training. Sims Academy thanks Kubota Training Manager and Sims advisory board member Mr. Greg Worley for his hand in outfitting the program with these supplies. Thanks to their support, as well as that of Barrow County School System (BCSS), these students have access to nearly $500 worth of equipment that they would have otherwise had to purchase on their own. We also thank Lanier Technical College for their partnership in this venture. The college has been very responsive to meet scheduling around transportation needs while coordinating the registration process.

BCSS Superintendent Dr. Chris McMichael says he's thrilled with this innovative and collaborative program. "What a testament to the power of partnerships focused on our students and their futures. Eternal gratitude to everyone who made this happen!"
