Barrow County first responders and multiple law enforcement agencies will participate in a multi-agency functional training exercise at Holsenbeck Elementary School during the Teacher Planning Day on Friday, Aug. 29, 2025.
A functional training exercise is used to strengthen efforts to prevent, respond to, and recover from all types of hazards. It is a lengthy exercise that will use, as much as possible, the equipment and personnel that would be called upon in a real event.
“Collaboration in training leads to unity in crisis. Strong relationships between schools and public safety are the cornerstone of community protection,” said Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith.
Neighbors can expect to see many emergency vehicles and personnel in and around HES. Holsenbeck School Road will also be closed to traffic from Highway 11 to Magnolia Drive from 7 a.m. until the early afternoon on Aug. 29.
We thank our community for their understanding as these teams prioritize safety and continue to train and prepare in the event of an emergency at one of our county’s schools.
Barrow County Fire Chief Brett Skinner said this type of exercise is vital. “It helps us determine the what-ifs and how to work through them together. Continued training like this is necessary.”
The teams did several training exercises like this during the summer. The last full-scale training exercise was in March 2024 at Russell Middle School.
“The frequent training and collaboration between our community’s first responders and our school system is essential for the safety and security of our students, staff, families, and visitors,” said Barrow County School System Superintendent Dr. Dallas LeDuff. “We are grateful for the partnership, protection, and preparation of these dedicated women and men.”
