Georgia State Law, often referred to as HB 251, gives families of public school students the option to request a transfer for their child to another school within their district where space is available and families provide transportation. The law allows us to determine available space within our permanent buildings and classrooms, but does not require us to create additional classrooms beyond our budgetary limitations.
For the 2025-26 school year, Barrow County School System has limited space in Kindergarten at all schools. The deadline for all requests for the 2025-26 school year is midnight on Friday, Sept. 12, 2025.
Additional Information:
- Families using school choice flexibility under HB 251 must provide their own transportation to out-of-zone schools.
- Such school choice placements are subject to revocation based on excessive student absences and/or disciplinary infractions.
- If granted an HB 251 waiver, students would move forward at the same school until they reach the last grade level that school offers. If the next school is not in their home enrollment zone, families will need to apply again at that time for that school if there are openings during the HB 251 window.
