The Georgia Science & Engineering Fair (GSEF) is Georgia’s premier forum for students to showcase their original research, compete for awards, and interact with top-level professional scientists. The science fair system in Georgia serves not only to recognize students for their achievements, but also to prepare students to succeed and flourish in an increasingly complex and highly technical world by becoming problem solvers, critical thinkers, reflective learners, and more productive and influential members of their communities.
Every year thousands of students compete in local science fairs across the state. The winners of these fairs are invited to compete in one of the GSEF-Affiliated Regional Fairs in January and February, and the top projects from each regional fair are invited to attend and compete at the state fair.
The Northeast Georgia Regional Science & Engineering Fair was held on Friday, January 31st. Barrow County School System had eleven teams compete at the regional level. Read about the Barrow County School System Fair Winners here.
BCSS had four (4) GOLD medal projects which will all be advancing to the state level of competition.
GOLD MEDAL PROJECTS
- "The Chemical Analysis of Slime Components" - Kristain Johnson, Kendraya Jones, and Ivory Coates-Powell from Winder-Barrow High School
- "Are Our Tastebuds Colorblind?" - Emma Pitman from Russell Middle School
- "Recapture" - Kendall Sanders and Hannah Oliver from the Arts & Innovation Magnet Program
- "Finding Sugar Content with Lasers" - Justin Kight, Ryana Payne, and Brittany Vicente from Winder-Barrow High School
Other BCSS students also received recognition for their accomplishments.
SILVER MEDAL PROJECTS
- "Fabric with Scotchguard" - Natalie Mays from Russell Middle School
- "Halitosis and Hypotension" - Frances Beckemeyer from Russell Middle School
- "Who's the Nastiest?" - Alexis Williams and Kayla Boebel from Arts & Innovation Magnet Program
- "Slime Time" - Michael Huebner from Bear Creek Middle School
BRONZE MEDAL PROJECTS
- "Which cup will keep water cold or hot the longest?" - Brianna Ashe from Haymon-Morris Middle School
Two projects were also honored with the American Chemical Society Award.

The 72nd Georgia Science & Engineering Fair will take place at the Classic Center in downtown Athens, GA Thursday, March 26-28, 2020. A select number of projects will be chosen to advance to the International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF), which will take place in Anaheim, CA May 10-15, 2020. Good luck to our competitors!
