Grad Track Student Spotlight: Yaquelin Mejia

Yaquelin Mejia is making great strides toward a bright future with her work at Apalachee High School. She is doing well in all her classes and has made a tremendous turnaround from where she was this time last year.

Last school year, Yaquelin was having a really hard time finding the motivation to go to school. When she was at school, she would often find ways to avoid class. Her attendance impacted her grades, and she was in a big hole. She made the decision to attend Foothills because she thought it might be a better fit for her. Her experience started out well at Foothills, but she quickly found herself falling back into the same attendance patterns she had at Apalachee.

In mid-spring, Yaquelin decided to return to Apalachee. Her attendance improved, but due to her reenrollment date, she had to audit all her classes. She was frustrated with this, but she understood why she had to audit. Despite this, she still committed to attending school every day. Due to all the year's events, Yaquelin was going to be behind in credits. Graduation Specialist Andy Dean began working with her to develop a plan to get back on track. She was losing a little hope as she knew she would earn no credits for her six weeks of attendance. Through conversations with Mr. Dean, she started to see how she could get back to where she wanted to be.

Fast forward to this year and Yaquelin is doing amazing. Her attendance is much better. She is taking honors classes and has high grades in almost all of them. She has a vision for where she wants her life to go and is considering her post-secondary education options. Mr. Dean says, "Yaquelin is an outstanding student and individual who will go extremely far with her talents and skills. She is a true success story and is on her way to remarkable things!

We are proud of our students who are on the “Grad Track.” A Grad Track student has either failed one or more academic classes and/or is behind in credits needed for graduation with their cohort class. Graduation Specialists at all three Barrow County School System (BCSS) high schools support students who meet these qualifications.
