Extended School Year

Are summer services available for my child?
Extended School Year services are available for students who require them. The Individual Education Program Committee should consider three factors when deciding if Extended School Year Services are required:

  1. Regression/recoupment
  2. Critical point of instruction and
  3. Mastery of goals and objectives on the Individual Education Program.

What is Extended School Year (ESY)?
Extended School Year is the extension of special education and related services beyond the normal 180 days school year as determined by the Individual Education Program.

Is Extended School Year the same as Summer School that is typically offered by school systems and psychoeducational programs?
No. Summer School is typically provided for enrichment or enhancement of the educational program.  Extended School Year is an extension of the Individual Educational Program. However, typical Summer School sessions, graduation tests, remedial programs or etc., may be used to meet extended school year needs, if this is the decision of the Individual Educational Program Committee.

Once my child qualifies for ESY, will he/she continue to qualify each year?
No, ESY services are addressed each year by the IEP committee. The above three factors must be considered with student's current functioning in mind.
