2025-26 Georgia Milestones Update
The board received an update concerning the 2025-2026 Georgia Milestones Assessment System results for mathematics, science, and social studies. The assessment measures student mastery of the Georgia content standards. Watch the presentation about the results.
BCSS Instructional Frameworks Featured
The BCSS Instructional Frameworks have been updated to support the expectations outlined in Board Policy BAB and establish a consistent, standards-aligned approach to teaching and learning. Initial implementation efforts will focus on creating clarity for students and teachers through learning targets, success criteria, feedback, and student ownership of learning.
Strategic Scorecard
The full strategic scorecard is now publicly available through the 2026-2031 Strategic Plan web page. The scorecard will show how we're progressing toward our goal areas and objectives.
BOLD Spotlight: Winder-Barrow High School
This month’s BOLD Spotlight featured Winder-Barrow High School’s GG Academy for freshmen designed to support students as they transition to high school. The program provides additional resources and guidance to help students succeed and stay on track for graduation. Learn more.

Teacher Salary Comparison
BCSS Chief of Staff Dr. Adam Kurtz showed the board heat maps that compared the updated salaries for Barrow BOLD teachers to surrounding counties. The data shows we are now highly competitive across certification and experience levels.

Renovation Projects Update
Athletic renovation projects at Winder-Barrow High School and Apalachee High School are nearing completion. They include new tracks at the stadiums, new windscreens for stadium bleachers, baseball and softball field updates, and athletic field lighting upgrades.

Congratulations to our Teachers of the Year!

It was an honor to celebrate our 2026–2027 Teachers of the Year during this meeting! While our winners were announced at the end of last school year, this meeting provided a special opportunity to recognize them publicly as a group.

We are also grateful to the organizations that generously support our Teacher of the Year program through classroom grants. Each school-level Teacher of the Year received a $250 classroom grant, while our district finalists received $350. In addition, our District Teacher of the Year, Lee Griffeth, received a $350 classroom grant, along with $1,000 from Peach State Federal Credit Union and $1,000 from Heyward Allen Motor Company Cadillac GMC Buick Toyota. We sincerely appreciate our community partners!

Tree Painting Presented to High School Principals

On behalf of the Board of Education, Board Chair Lisa Maloof presented our three high school principals with paintings acquired at this year's Georgia School Boards Association conference. The artist, Mr. Sam Glenn, describes the art as a symbol of growth, resilience, and renewal. Ms. Maloof said the board saw the painting as a reflection of the work taking place in our schools each day - symbolizing the visible growth and the important work that often goes unseen. "From Pre-K on, our teachers are planting seeds and nourishing young and maturing minds. At graduation, we celebrate the culmination of those years of growth."

The Barrow County Board of Education (BOE) has nine members. Board members serve a four-year term, with three districts elected at-large and six elected by district. The Board is the official governing body of the Barrow County School System. The regular business BOE meetings take place on the first Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Professional Development Center (PDC) at 179 W. Athens St., Winder, GA 30680. BCSS uses eBoard to be transparent in governance and operations. You can find the most recent information concerning the BOE meetings on eBoard.
