STAR Students & Teachers

STAR students with Superintendent

An event which celebrates Barrow County’s brightest culminated with the naming Barrow County’s STAR Students - Lauren Freeman a senior at Winder-Barrow High School and Kelly Eick a senior at Apalachee High School for the 2019-2020 school year. Each high school STAR Student is asked to select her STAR Teacher and explain the impact the teacher had on their educational career.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program honors Georgia's highest achieving high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development.  To obtain the STAR nomination, high school seniors must have the highest score on any single test date of the SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

Lauren Freeman selected her Calculus teacher Stephanie Britt, whom she had in 11th and 12th grade for Calculus and AP Calculus. Lauren praised Ms. Britt for making math fun and the joy of being in her classroom. Stephanie Britt said she knew that Lauren had high goals, and that it was her job as a teacher to prepare her for Georgia Tech.

Kelly Eick chose Band Director Dion Muldrow as her STAR teacher. Kelly first joined the marching band as a freshman. Mr. Muldrow invested in her personally by building her up as a leader and through his leadership example, Kelly aspired to be like him. In return, Mr. Muldrow said that Kelly is a selfless leader, and she's going to change the world through her love and compassion.
