Sims Academy students are able to build a strong foundation for their medical careers through our dual enrollment partnership with Lanier Technical College. In this program, highly qualified instructors from Lanier Technical College teach students in the Career and Technical Education programs available to students through Sims Academy.
The first point of contact in a medical office, hospital, or clinic is usually the medical administrative assistant. Persons working in this position are found in a variety of locations with common job titles like unit secretary, medical office assistant, patient coordinator, or admissions coordinator. This is a unique role in that it combines both direct and indirect patient care duties and requires a strong balance of administrative skills and interpersonal abilities.
The Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate is the first credential students can earn in the medical assisting program. Medical Administrative Assistants greet patients, answer the telephone, make appointments, and gather information from patients for patient files. In addition, these individuals develop good interpersonal and customer service skills - being courteous, professional, and helpful – which are critical for this job. Being an active listener often is a key quality needed that requires the ability to listen patiently to the points being made, to wait to speak until others have finished, and to ask appropriate questions when necessary. In addition, the ability to relay information accurately to others is important.
This program prepares graduates to receive a Medical Administrative Assistant certificate from Lanier Technical College, which qualifies them to work in this field. These courses will also provide students with a jumpstart to their future diploma or degree-level studies.
